World Geo-Gathering Event

Postby *TnT* » Mon Jul 13, 2009 7:55 pm

So, who is going? and for how long?

I think we'll go up on Saturday for the day. If work cooperates, we might even go up on Friday evening.

We hope to see a big contingent from NWA there. As well as from many other places from around the country.

I am going up on Thursday and staying till the end on Sunday. I am posting my phone number on the Fone a Friend list if anyone wants to team up on some caching. Edieo and I plan on doing some together. I hope there a lot of people from our area going.

Won't be able to make it, but I picked up a geocoin the other day which wants to go to events (TB1KA4K). If anyone from around here is definitely going, I'd be happy to pass the coin on to you, I live in Rogers on the Bentonville border and am home most of the time. PM me for my address.

We have always appreciated the efforts of people who host or assist in hosting an event. And we know from experience how much work is involved. An event was attempted in Northeast Oklahoma this past week/weekend. We were very disappointed at this event because of lack of planning and organization and the location. Several geofriends paid money for merchandise (t-shirts/geocoins/lanyards) that was promised and never delivered at this event. We even had some phone calls with the event owner at the time we registered and paid our money, but very few of the promised activities actually happened. There was no food or drink service in a very isolated location in spite of the fact that the owner promised that an air conditioned cafe would be on site and open. There were only a handful of logable caches in this isolated area in spite of the fact that the owner promised at least 100 caches of all terrain and difficulty levels. When we arrived, we were told that the only caches available at the time were the poker run and none of those caches were of terrains that were accessible without at least one hour of walking on trails in various conditions of shape. Other cachers have reported they had a good time and look forward to returning next year. We respect their opinions but we wonder how many events they have attended in the past. Thanks for letting us vent.

Despite wanting to believe the best of people, we have to agree with these comments.

Poor planning, pathetic location and non-existent execution describes this event. The "can't wait til next year" comments bewilder us. But as rklmbl say, we respect their opinions.

We have been approached about helping with next years, but after seeing the location, there's no way we would even consider it.

For those of you who didn't go, congratulations!!

We can say:

Been there, done that, paid for the t-shirt, but probably won't get it.

rklmbl and tnt has said about all there is to say about this event. I will not be there next year if there is one. The place was horrible. I did salvage the weekend by hooking up with a couple of other geocachers (Edieo and Math Seeker) and caching in 4 different states. I was told my t shirt and geocoin would be mailed to me but I have real serious doubts about that.

Sorry to hear about all that but I kind of figured it wouldnt be very good. I've been up there and played paintball and ir=t was awsome but we brought our own food and so i knew how OUT OF THE WAY it was. I guess I'm glad I didn't go.

What the place reminded me most of was a survivalist camp like you'd see in the movies. All the bare ground and tanks. It does appear they're doing some work as far as concessions etc., but the "facilities" stank so bad you couldn't use them.

What i can't get over is that there are two more events scheduled for the place this fall and every "will attend", as well as many of the "attended" logs from the geo-gathering talk about how nice it is there.

Sorry folks, but I spent 5 years in west Texas and 6 months in SW Asia and both were better.

I know...with all of the issues of items pre-bought, the lack of event caches, and all of the promises that apparently didn't happen....

I just don't get it.

We should have wonderedI why someone from Idaho would come to Okahoma to host a geocaching event. I did salvage a good weekend and geocaching trip out of it.
I too wonder about the logs that said it was great and they can't wait until next year.
