Scout Falls

Postby OEnavigators » Thu Mar 20, 2008 8:56 pm

After all the rain we've had my wife and I decided that today would be the perfect day to hike to GCRRD0 "Slate Falls" and grab the cache there. When we were driving on Poteau Mtn Road we ran across some forest servive workers clearing small limbs and trees from the road. They told me that they had seen people drive past so they figured that the road was clear ahead.

We gleefully made our way down the road only to be confronted by a large tree across it. :? We decided to wait for the workers to catch up and roughly 45 minutes latter a different worker arrived and called the others to remove the tree.

It was looking like it was too late to attempt our hike and as the minutes ticked by I realized that we wouldn't have time. While waiting for the workers to clear the road I was talking to the supervisor who had asked to take some photos of my waterfall guidebook. (It turns out that the FS didn't have the coordinates to the falls.) She recommended that we hike down an old trail nearby to see "Belle Stars Cave."

We took her advice and hiked the old washed out ATV trail down, and I mean all the way down, to Rock Creek and found the cave. We decided to explore further and came across an old boy scout camp that was used back in the 40's and 50's located in a cave behind a waterfall! It was awesome. All in al we ended up hiking about 1.5 miles down the mountain to the falls with a pretty intense creek crossing (it was cold!). The hard part was coming back up. LOL. It was a great adventure!

My Tim Earnst impression at Scout Falls:

If you look just to the right of the water you can see some rocks stacked up. This is the outside of a fireplace the scouts built to stay warm in the cave. This is a picture of the fireplace from inside the cave:
