My First Pet Peeve

Postby Gruizzer » Mon Oct 22, 2007 7:27 pm

ok, I think Ive encountered my first pet peeve in geo-caching, darn it.

Recently one of my placed caches was not placed back into its original spot. I had went by it one night several weeks ago to let my daughter find it, and dang it if we couldnt find it!! :x

I was about to disabled it when someone posted a find on it. So I had to email them and ask them where they found it.

My new pet peeve is cachers who move a cache from its original spot!! grrrr
Anyone else have this happen?

I think you can call this geo-migration. Cacher "A" finds it and wants to make it easier for cacher "B" and re-hides it a little easier. "B" re-hides it to make it easier for "C" and so on. I've seen them migrate 50 feet or more this way.

Our "At the end of the road" had 3 or 4 DNFs posted at one point, so I went to check on it. Couldn't find it, so replaced it. Even had to send the TB that was in it to the "unknown" location. Lo and behold, a month later somebody found the original container.

It happens. Unless you check frequently, there's probably nothing that can be done about it.

I always put it back in the exact same spot. I don't understand why people would move them to make it easier for the next person.

I found a cache lying on the ground a couple of weeks ago and put it where I assumed it was originally. I made sure to email the owner to tell them where I hid it and I've been concerned ever since because the coordinates were off quite a bit.

While doing maintenance on a few of our caches and while hunting others that some cachers don't take the time to re-hide the cache very well.

I did read an entry in one of our log books where a muggle had found it. Took the time to write something (BTW more than any of the cachers) and even traded. It was neat.

This is very irritating to both hide a cache that is moved and to try to find a cache after it has been moved by other cachers. We do try to rehide caches that have obviousley been moved, but usually email the owner to let them know of the problem.

The very out in the open cache we found today looked like a muggle had found it and left it right in the open. Nothing else was disturbed like they had been doing landscaping. Not really sure what had happened, but we did rehide it. I'm kind of glad we made a cold cache run today because it might not have been left alone if it stayed there any longer.

I think this happens more than we might realize. A muggle somehow stumbles across a cache that is not very well hidden. They then realize that it might be something that is important to somebody and try to put it back where they THINK they found it, but don't quite succeed. Sooner or later, the cache is left out in the open...

I think the wind blew this one out of its hiding place. It was hidden so good the first 5 or 6 cachers attempts were DNFs!!
