How do I solve Projection Caches?

Postby Sunny Arkfam » Thu Jun 03, 2010 5:45 am

I would like to learn how to solve puzzle caches like jaygill makes, for example:

GC1ZJ9A Greenland 2 (N 36° 00.332 W 094° 11.702): The description says
From GC1921H "Duct" Tales go 853.6 yds. @ 172.1* T

or

GC1PM40 cccpp - Cottonwood Levitation
From the cache (N 35° 27.095 W 094° 23.542) go 90 feet to GC178AZ Road Closed,
Then 3420 feet to GCRCNV,
Then 2,450 feet to GC1MF2Y
Then 163.9* T for 2,402 feet to cache.

Fill in the letter with numbers to find the Bonus.
N35* AB.CDE W094* FG.HIJ

cccpp series = Crawford County Cache Placement Promotion Series *= degrees T= True North

Thanks for your help.
Cache on,

I would be willing to help you out, as my schedule permits.
Also Cardinal may be willing to help you, I know of a couple
of special projects he's doing for the Shiloh Museum, so I don't
know his schedule. Shoot me a PM. I will be prompt as possible.

as would I.

There are a few software that can help, as some GPS units can project for you

If anyone would like to team up and do the new Lake Wilson Challenge, I would be game.
I tested all seven caches for Cardinal before publishing. It would have to be after the
fourth of July. Each cache will take about an hour or so. If you want to learn
triangulation, surveying and projections this is the cache to do it on.

The West side series is a lot easier,so we could start there.
It will take about two hours for the West side, and all day
for the East side. The East side terrain is much more difficult,
he has it rated fairly but probably rates a 5/5 in my opinion.

It's the toughest cache I have done to date. It will
wear you out mentally and physically.

If you would like to try them, email me or PM
and we can start working on the date.

You will have to bring your "A" game for the East side.

I will be happy to show you how to do the projections. We can create some waypoints and try to work through some different ways of doing it. You can use some gps's to do it but since mine is not set up that way, I do mine on a program that I have at home. If I miss my calulations I don't know it until I get into the field. Sometimes it requires refiguring and a second trip. Let me know if I can help you in any way.

Judy, don't you have the legend HCX? It has the capability to project waypoints, (look at page 9 of the manual == or at least page 9 of the one on Garmin's site) which is probably the harder way to do triangulations.

The easiest way (easier than on a map -- almost as easy as using fizzyCalc), is to use your goto function.

I've got an iphone app (iGCT) that if you input the initial waypoint and distance, or 2 points, will give you a projection. You have to be creative on how you do a three point triangulation, but it works VERY well.
