Tentative Breakfast Meet and Greet in Van Buren?

Postby guwisti » Fri Apr 09, 2010 7:39 pm

Who all would be interested and available on Sunday, May 2nd at 10am for a breakfast Meet and Greet in Van Buren at Cottage Cafe. If you can make it reply here and I'll see if we need to get reservations or if it's just a small crowd, show up. I guess I then make an event on geocaching.com? or is that for events where you're doing hides? Since this is my first "event" any help on what I'm officially supposed to do would be great. Let me know if you can make it! :)

Hi, while there's nothing that says that you can't just "get together", if you want it to be a gc.com listed event, you should keep the guidelines in mind.

Event Caches

Event caches are gatherings that are open to all geocachers and which are organized by geocachers. While a music concert, a garage sale, an organized sporting event, a ham radio field day or a town’s fireworks display might be of interest to a large percentage of geocachers, such events are not suitable for submission as event caches because the organizers and the primary attendees are not geocachers. In addition, an event cache should not be set up for the sole purpose of drawing together cachers for an organized hunt of another cache or caches. Such group hunts are best organized using the forums or an email distribution list.

For geocaching events that involve several components, such as a full weekend event that includes a geocoin trading session, a seminar and a potluck dinner, multiple event listings may be submitted if they each stand on their own merits as events meeting the listing guidelines.

Event caches should be submitted no less than two weeks prior to the date of the event, so that potential attendees will have sufficient notice to make their plans. Events are generally published no more than three months prior to the date of the event, to avoid having the listing appear for a prolonged period of time on the nearest caches page and in the weekly email notification of new caches. Exceptions are sometimes made for events that are designed to attract a regional, national or international group of geocachers, or if an overnight stay is expected as part of the event, requiring advance reservations and travel planning (for example, a campout). Contact your reviewer if you wish to set up such an event, which may be published up to six months prior to the event date. Groundspeak can promote Geocaching through events that may be an exception to the guidelines, if we deem that is necessary to further the game.

After the event has passed, the event cache should be archived by the organizer within four weeks.

This was copied from the gc.com site, you can see them yourself by GOING HERE.

If I can help you in any way, let me know. You should try to contact jffok or geniegill. They're great cachers from down your way.

Would I go?

Yes.

could I go that date?

Nope, cause I'm in DC that weekend.

If I can suggest another idea, the World Wide Flash mobs are held every 6 months. The next one is May 14th. Any possibility we could do a flash mob, and then arrange for a longer event on the same day?

I ran the last flash mob, but we could maybe come up with an idea if you'd want to play with it.

let me know.

What the heck's a flash mob? And why is it on a Friday?

And if I do do (lol) a breakfast meet and greet it will be an unofficial off the records let's just eat some eggs and bacon type of event I guess. But thinks for copying all of that over Tnt.

Ok did research and that sounds like fun! so basically you sign the log with an index card? I read the eHow site. :) Sounds like a lot of work though. hmmmm...anyone interested in flash mobbing? I'd say if we did that we'd need to do it in the evening.

Actually, the next WWFM (World WIde Flash Mob) is scheduled for May 15th, not may 14th. I'm not sure where your reearch took you guwisti, but the geocaching WWFM is coordinated by the folks at podcacher.com

Info can be Found here

As you'll see, if you look at some prior events, they're typically coordinated so they happen all over the world at the same time.

Thanks for the info TNT. Now that we know it's on a Saturday 10 in the morning (either Pacific) or our time would work. I'm thinking our time. And a location that just popped up in my head could be where the fountain is on Garrison. I think there's a bubbles cache located there. And i see that geocache events are all done different ways, but I like the idea of everyone bringing an index card or business card sized item with their geocaching name and throwing in a bucket to "log" the event. Seems like it would be difficult to sign an actual log in all hte hoopla. And then unofficially we could go eat afterwards, cache afterwards, whatev.

If anyone is interested in this let us know on here....and Ashallond if you want to co-coordinate this. Email me at guwisti@gmail.com and we'll work on it and get it posted as an official event on geocaching.

I did the last WWFM (and yeah, it's on Saturday. my bad) so if you wanted to make it your event that's fine. I had them all sign a small paper and put them in a bucket and then drew out a name to award the FTF. We traded travel bugs, laughed about the artwork in front of Southside, and then we got a cache on campus (a grandfathered cache that I've sort of took over watching) for those who hadn't found it yet after the 15 minutes were over. I gave out a small list of nearby caches and then we were done. Nice easy event.

Now, nothing saying you couldn't hold a longer event (like lunch or a cache machine) soon there after. :)

Ok. I'm so doing this! I already have ideas! and what our "main thing" will be. About how many people did you have at your event Ashallond? Just curious. I'm just hoping I can pull this off! :)

10 plus a few muggles who came along as i was walking there wondering why I was leaving halfway through lunch during the major Quiz Bowl tourney I was running...but there's about 5-10 more cachers close by in the area, we might have more.
