Geo-senility

If it's about geocaching -- Let's hear it

Geo-senility

Postby HikerRon » Fri Dec 04, 2009 9:36 pm

It's sad, but i think that after 6 years, 4000+ finds, in 21 states and 3 foreign countries, ....i'm slowly reverting back to geo-newbie status.
It seems that i cant find anything anymore on the first try. Or i overlook the hide that is right under my nose.
Or i struggle with a find, only to discover it is a type of hide i've already seen 40 times! I have a red forehead from slapping myself:)
Anyone else have days like this?
is this just geo-geezer problem?

It wont be long before i'm stunned to find a skirt-lifter!:)

Welcome to my world brother Ron.

I have only "logged" about 280 finds in about 4 years of caching, even though my "finds are probably closer to 500-600.
Is it senility? Possibly. I would think it was more burnout or frustration.

The same old hides, skirtifters, roadsigns, magnetic keyholders on bridge railings. (Yes I own one.)
Why did I not log all my finds? The truth is I found most of them not being worthy of sitting down and
leaving comments about them. I do however sign the sheet and leave it at that.

Here is what worked for me and my proposal therapy.Pick out about 3-4 caches that are tough
as heck to get to,that include a good hike and have some nice scenery. Just enjoy your day
outside and your trek. Do not worry on your day of caching "can I write a decent log about my journey".

THe number of ones finds is really not important, in my opinion. Here is what is important to me.
Did I put out a hide that other cachers will recommend and take the time to leave me a decent note.
DId the Cacher put out a hide to take me somewhere different, with scenery and show me
something new hat he/she has had the pleasure of seeing, or maybe something new container wise.

Maybe the game will evolve back to what it used to be.

When I first started caching I had to learn on the caches of NonniPoppy, GolfNutz, The Griswolds, and Old River Runner. If you have ever found any of theirs you know they are a far cry from the likes of those types listed above. I think in the last couple of years the majority of caches have gotten so easy that I am getting cache stupid, so that when I don't walk straight to one my brain does not know what to do. Here lately I have had so many caches that have given me so much trouble when they should not have. It's driving me nuts. However it looks like all those easy hides are here to stay because that appears to be what the geocaching masses want. The best we can do is play along and try and get some great hides out there to slow 'em down in the middle and appreciate a quality cache.

"cache-stupid'' LOL. Describes the way i feel perfectly. and yes, Red, i miss those early days of caching a lot. Every cache was exciting then:)

I'm considering your advice, and may make a New Years Caching Resolution to not hunt any caches less than 2.5/2.5.

Now THERE is a suggestion for a new thread on here.....'Geocaching New Years Resolutions' :)

Cache stupid. I like that. I believe that was the point I was tring to make earlier.

Speaking of cache stupid, I had a bad case today on an ammo can with Gps
showing 2', just wasn't my day I guess.

I like the resolution idea alot. I will try to find a resolution
I know I can live with.

Ron, try the caches at Devil's Den. There are some good ones at the
park now, with a couple of PnG's thrown in. Better yet some nice hikes
and with leaf off tthe park is at it prettiest IMO.

Here a suggestion: mystery caches, some of them can be quite a workout for your brain
