Tips and tricks...Urban Hunting

Postby OEnavigators » Sat Dec 13, 2008 11:42 pm

As some of you may know I keep a blog. I'm slowly tweaking it to be a sort of geo-news from around the state type of blog. This will be relevant in a minute.

On a recent trip to Fort Smith my family and I decided to grab a couple of quick geocaches while we were there. Being so close to the holidays, both caches were absolutely infested with muggles. One cache location was actually hidden on a signpost at an intersection with nowhere to pull over, no sidewalk, and absolutely nothing around at all except of course the hundreds of cars moving up and down the very busy road.

After finding that cache I thought it would be entertaining and even helpful to write an article about tips and tricks cachers use to be stealthy. So what do you do to hide your hunt from muggles?

That sounds like a dangerous cache, especially if you have kids caching with you. So Tip#1 Dont hide caches like the one you just described.

We actually enjoyed the cache. I enjoy trying to look inconspicuous around muggles while we hunt for a cache. On that particular cache, I just pulled up right next to the sign on the side road and popped the hood on our car.
It was hilarious because everyone that did come down that road did everything they could to avoid eye contact with us. Thus allowing us to retrieve, sign, and replace the cache without any trouble. I actually signed the log with muggles waiting at the stop sign five feet away! They were very deliberately trying to not notice us. It was SO funny!! We use that trick a lot. So here's some of the things we do when in stealth mode:

pop the hood on the car and look as if you're having some car trouble.

pretend to tie your shoes

talking to your GPS as if it's a cell phone

Lets hear what everyone else does.

I tend to avoid these types of caches so I will not have to write a fifty word essay on them

Also the nervous tick and slobbering method works

I will actually admit to standing still and sketching a horrible looking stick figure picture of something I was staring at because some people wouldn't move, LOL.

I usually say "Im looking for something." They usually look at you funny and go on.

The hood thing is a good idea! Although once I was caching in Dallas, and I didnt have the hood up and I guy actually stopped and ask if I needed help! I said nah I was looking for something. HA!

A couple of my caching friends were asked if they lost something while looking for a cache in a parking lot. They reponded no we are just being geeks! The person fled! HA!

I also like to use the GPSr as a fake camera. Thats fun too.

We were hunting a cache Saturday while muggles kept driving by. The Cachettes and I were pretending to take pics of each other with the gps.

Once I pretended to have an argument with an ex boyfriend on my "phone" , I was ranting and raving and stomping around while searching (I looked like I was just having a fit). A guy that was taking out trash hurried and left me alone after I gave him a look that said "Do you want to be next?" Scared him to death.
If you're not living on the edge you're just taking up space.

I like to call my stock broker with my gps. You should see the looks I get when I tell him to, "Sell 3000 shares when it hits $345." Then you know who is really listening to ya. 8)
