.gpx files

Postby OEnavigators » Wed Jul 23, 2008 8:05 pm

Can you load .gpx files onto a Magellan eXplorist 400? Up until now I've loaded the .loc through the geocache manager no problem. I ran a PQ and saved it to my computer. I then opened it with easyGPS. I hit send to GPS and nothing happened. :?

I'd appreciate any help anyone can give. Think simple. Like, maybe a tutorial written on Big Chief tablet paper with pictures.

I can't help you. Since I started using (free) GSAK, I stoppped using easygps.

Did I mention that GSAK is free? At least as long as you don't mind a nag screen every time you open it.

And, as I recall, easyGPS doesn't do gpx files.

Okay. I can take a hint. I downloaded GSAK. It looks neat. I've just started tooling around with it but it looks highly customizable. I downloaded a PQ and successfully loaded it into GSAK. I tried to upload onto my GPS but it said my unit will only take 200 caches in one .gs file. I had 300 so I'll try a smaller one later.

Hey OE if easygps will not create .gs files you can use handy macro with GSAK that will create as many files as you need making sure they dont go over the 200 limit including children. So in you example it would take your 300 waypoints and create you 2 gs files to load up. I use this all the time now!!

Here is the link to the macro and how to use it:

Hey Thanks! :D There's going to be a pretty steep learning curve with all this software. I think in the long run it will be pretty cool. I really don't even need 100 waypoints but it sure would be cool to have them.

I'll try all that tomorrow. I've been painting my house all day and I am so sunburned! Covered in paint and grass since I had to mow to. I hate my lawn. I wish it would die!

I did it! I FINALLY got 100 caches on my GPS. I like the .gpx files. It shows difficulty and everything. Even the hint. Pretty neat-o. I still have to print out caches which bites but I just spent five minutes doing what used to take me....I'm not really sure but it was a long time!

Now on to the next challenge. Does anybody know anything about exporting waypoints to Google Earth so you can create a kml file?

Next step is to get a cheap Palm PDA, put CacheMate on it and go paperless.

Okay I have another question. Thanks to red ink, who loaned me a Garmin Vista Cx, I have a GPS.

I have no idea how to get GSAK to send my PQ to the GPS though. I've tried everything and just can't get it to work. Please help!

Serial or USB cable?

Go to the GPS submenu at the top of the GSAK screen. Select Setup GPS. Select Garmin as the type. If you have a USB cable, check that box. If serial cable, set port speed to 9600 and then try it using each of the ports available in the drop down until one works.

Should be all there is to it.

I figured it out. I had everything set right in GSAK and on the GPS but I didn't have the Garmin plug-in on my computer so it couldn't connect to it.

If you want a neat combination, you may try a etrex, nuvi combo. I started with a lowrance crossover, XOG. The maps were $5 a piece. I loved it but I needed cheaper maps, so I got an etrex. I lost a lot of functionality but gained a lot too.

I got a Nuvi 285wt for Christmas. I loaded the Nuvi macro Howlingmoon mentioned. I load the same PQ into both devices. I use the Nuvi to drive there and a paperless cache before I get out of the car. I use the etrex on the trail and it is a nice set up.

I've been looking at the Nuvi's. We travel a lot to go caching and I'm always getting us turned around. Having a GPS capable of getting us around streets and such would be great. Have you tried your Nuvi on any forest service roads? I was wondering if they had the maps with them.

Most if not all of the roads I have been on that my 260W has not recognized were newer roads built within the last year or two. I believe my maps are the 2009 version but, still missing some roads they should have had. lol I don' know if I've been on any forest service roads while out and about, though.
