Help!

Postby OEnavigators » Thu Mar 27, 2008 11:21 am

I'm buying a new GPS and I really need some help. I was going to get the new Delorme but it's a little too pricey for me right now so I've settled on either a Garmin 60C or a 60Cs. Can someone please tell me what the difference is? Also, will either of these units work when we go paperless?

As near as I can tell, as Garmin progressed through the 60 series, they've added resolution, a barometric altimeter and some other features. The csx also has a micro SD card to store more maps/waypoints.

I don't think any of them have the capability to take you paperless.

For that, you'll need something (possibly a seperate device) that has either palm or ppc capabilities.

Remember, you need a ppc gps enabled device for whereigo.

I actually got it in the mail today! I didn't get the 60cs though. It was still a little pricey, Christie calls me a tight wad, so I went and bought an explorist 400 on ebay. I got a deal though. I gave $114.00 including shipping and I got: the GPS, carrying case (I'll be stylin in Clarksville! ), memory card, mapsend cd, and a car charger. I'm going to take it with us this weekend when I take the kids letterboxing and see how it does on a cache or two.

I plan on getting the 60cs next year or maybe even a 60csx. Hopefully I'll have our premium membership next week then all I'll need is a PDA. I can't wait. You should see all the grief I'm going through getting all the caches together for the event. Ugh!

Just a word of advice to all my fellow cachers. DO NOT BUY A MAGELLAN! What a piece of junk. My new one doesn't work. Now I'll have to wait for a replacement if I even get that. I discovered while trying to find out what was wrong with it that a lot of the explorist and older GPS's won't WAAS enable anymore and the word from the company is that there will be no firmware fix for it. But a really nice man from India offered to sell me a new Triton at 20% off  .
Now I'm stuck with manually punching in the coordinates and no map whatsoever. This sucks.

My Explorist 210 has worked flawlessly for over a year. I love it!

I have a 210. The explorist series are great GPSr's when they work. The problem that I have found is that since the owners of PRN122 moved their satellite last summer and the Government decided to change over to a new PRN, if your explorist or older magellan was not on sometime around the changeover then you will not receive a WAAS signal.

So if you buy a new unit (not including the Triton) or clear "All" memory from your magellan then you'll most likely lose those satellites and the signal. My 210 lost its WAAS when I had someone upload some caches from their laptop to my GPS during an event. For some reason my 210 reset back to its original firmware and "TA-DA", my WAAS signal has taken a dirtnap.

I really do like the explorist series. I'm currently using a basic Garmin etrex Venture (no map or ability to upload) and I've found the Magellans easier to operate and often more accurate than this one. I really don't know about the GPSMap series. It's just so disappointing that the customer service is non-existent. That's what will drive me to go to Garmin. Well, that and the fact that when I looked at the specs for the new Colorado series it was so cool that I almost soiled myself.

Hmmm. That is not good. Where can I read up more on this?

There is this thread over on the groundspeak forums. There is also the explorist group on Yahoo and also GPSFAQs.org which is a great source of information.

There is hope. For some reason apparently if you download the European firmware onto your explorist (after saving your basemap) then apparantly you'll get WAAS back. I'm not anywhere near techno savvy enough to get all this yet.
