Munzee Mania

If it's about geocaching -- Let's hear it

Munzee Mania

Postby *TnT* » Sun Jul 31, 2011 8:37 am

Captured my first Munzee this morning - (Thanks AR Stickerdude). If you haven't heard of this, go to www.munzee.com

It's basically a game where QR-style barcodes are hidden by the players. Then, other players come along and find them by scanning them with their smartphone. The apps are free and available for IOS (3GS and 4G) and Android phones with auto-focus cameras.

There is currently only one Munzee deployed in this corner of the state, but its been growing fast over the past 3 weeks or so. the geocaching podcast did a segment on it last week.

Check it out and let us know what you think.

I hear that about the electric bill. It does work with the 3GS.

I thought the 3GS did have an auto focus camera. Sometimes, it takes a few seconds to capture one. Did you try it on the one on the main site page?

Deb, talked to a friend today and he told me that all 3GS iPhones have auto-focus. Sometimes with his wife's he has to double tap the screen to activate the auto-focus.

I have created several Munzees. I'm trying to decide how/where to hide them. Geocache style or just laminate and hide? Feedback???

My feeling is that since a smartphone (even an Android phone) is nowhere near as accurate as a handheld GPS, I try not to "hide" them in too difficult a manner and to make the description such that you can almost find them without a GPS. Also, I believe that we need to do whatever we can to get more people interested to get more placements, so again, I don't want them to be too hard. Finally, this is our chance to get away from hiding them like newer geocache hides -- no more lamp posts!!!
