Log deleted, what would you do ?

If it's about geocaching -- Let's hear it

Log deleted, what would you do ?

Postby Howlingmoon » Sun Mar 15, 2009 9:00 pm

What would you do if someone deletes your legitimate log only because you took all the trackables out of the cache ?

I think people put more than one trackable in caches in order for more people to be able to get them and move them one. I don't think I would go as far as to delete someone's log though.

#1 - I would never take all the trackables from a cache unless they had been languishing there for several months. i.e. the cache qualified for the FCC.

#2 - It's the cache owner's cache, to do with as he sees fit. If he wants to delete logs thats his choice. Not necessarily the best way to make friends and influence people, but...

#3 - Some people who've had this happen have just logged another cache, or one of their own saying something like "logging in place of GCxxxx where my log was deleted...."

Finally, there used to be a lot of things about this game that used to bother me: people who don't log trackables promptly (OK, this one still bugs me somewhat), people who will log a GC number more than once. People who go around refinding caches they've found previously just to move trackables around even though they're not helping it towards its goal the ITBJ.

We just decided that we play it our way according to our code of ethics and let others play it their way according to theirs and we all live happily ever after. Until, we start getting TFTC logs and then. Oh well, what can you do.

That depends on what the cache descripition says. If they specificly state. "Don't take them all" or "Swap one for one", then I guess they can do that. What cache is in question?

Ding! Ding! #130. And there was NO mention of any RULES regarding taking/leaving trackables. It was a new cache that I was FTF on. I never leave a trackable behind. Who's to say the next person to find it (whether cacher or muggle) won't just keep the trackables ? We all know there are those kinds of people out there. We've all heard about geocoins and even travel bugs going missing. I've reposted my log, and saved it in notepad tis time. If they delete it again, I'll just log one of my hides. My stats will be off, since I don' have any 3-1's but, oh well.

I realize everyone plays the game their way, and I'm perfectly fine with that but, to delete my log only because I played the game the way I see fit ? That's childish. Thank you all for your opinions in tis matter.

You never leave trackables behind, howling? What do you do with them then?

T.N.T. I like your explaination on taking and moving trackables. When I take one I try to move it within just a few weeks. I also try to move it in the right direction if it has a journey. I know sometimes unavoidable circumstances prevent the best of intentions.
I think honor and integrity are apart of geocaching.

What I meant was that when I find a cache with trackables, I don' leave them there. I DO move and place the ones I pick up. And I always try to help their goals.

The idiot deleted my log again, so I've logged my own Tram Law - Muggle Factor, which has the same 3-1 rating. At least my log count and my combination (you know the different difficulty/terrain combinations) will reflect the way they're supposed to be on my profile.

Have you contacted the owner and asked why they deleted you? Maybe if you explained that you didn't undersatnd that you were not to take all the bugs and tell them it won't happen again they will reinstate you. You may have to be humble. But then again it may not be worth it if the owner ( I don't know who it is because I have not looked it up) is going to be that way. If there are constant problems with that cacher, people will figure it out on their own and will avoid his/her caches.

I've deleted a few logs before. Never before sending a polite email though. As the cache owner the geocacher in question has every right to delete a found log. It's sad that he deleted your log due to his own misunderstanding of the game. I found the "note" left in the cache description to be in very poor taste.
If it really bugs you, contact Chuck Walla and explain the situation. Requiring that a certain number of trackables remain in the cache would make this one an ALR I think and should have its icon changed. Or, and I like this option, just keep relogging the cache. Over, and over, and over. Make it a part of your daily routine. This has actually worked for some geocachers.

Are you referring to the note he put on the listing page, Chris ? That wasn't there earlier.

After I posted my original log, he sent me an email, and it was most definitely not polite. He just sent me yet another email quoting the three geocaching rules to me. The ones that say take an item, leave an item, write about your adventure in the logbook, and to log the cache on geocaching.com. He's forgetting, however, that trackables are not trade/swag items. Then he goes on to say that his main reason for deleting my log was because of the spoiler of how I got it. Why didn't he just say that in the first place ? No, that wasn't the main or even the only reason. It was the trackables. I could copy/paste all the emails he's sent me but, what good would it do ? What's done tis done.

I'd have to agree with you Moonie. He could have emailed and asked you to edit your post so you don't reveil to much. Also he could have placed a note (nicer than the one thats there now) to only take one trackable. I know when I had my TB hostel up, I stated, "Take as many as you like but leave at least one in the hostel for the next cacher."

I'm looking forward to seeing your coin collection at the meet and greet. What is there? 60?

Also if you still need those containers camoed, bring them and I can show you how I do mine real quick and cheap.

Yeah, that was the one. I think you're doing the right thing and not letting it get to you.

I just thought it was in very poor taste to be so rude about an issue that only reflects that particular geocacher hasn't themselves taken the time to understand how the game is played. Of course I've been on edge lately anyway. Going on month two of my diet and week one of quitting smoking.

After a carrying kids at a creek crossing while out hiking yesterday, I actually yelled at a tree. Yeah, I've gone off the deep end.

There are 60 geocoins currently in my collection, plus Wolfie (TB), and four more on the way at the moment. I can't wait to share them with others for the first time. :D I'll probably buy a few more before the event too. grins

The two containers I originally wanted camo'd have already been placed (Under Developed x63 and Under Lock And Key). I could temporarily disable them and bring them with me. I also have two more LARGE ammo cans that I bought a couple weeks ago for a "can't pass it up" price. grins

Chris, you haven't seen all that has been said between me and tis person. I HAVE let it bother me. I've said a few things that I should not have. I've since sent him an email trying to clear the air, and see if he'll let me log the cache if I edit my log so tis not spoiler-ish.

What really irritates me tis people who have supposedly been playing tis game for years but, only have double digit finds and single digit hides, and think they are better than any and every one else who plays the game differently from them in any possible way.

Good luck with the diet and quitting smoking. I'll keep you in my thoughts. :)
