I'm so confused

Postby *TnT* » Thu Aug 14, 2008 5:40 pm

Is nobody else seeing what I'm seeing? When you first go to nwacachers.com, you should see the portal page. In the middle column of the portal, in large red letters, you should see a welcome message starting with "IMPORTANT" and continuing on to say that if signing up for an account to please include your geocaching name and city/state.

Obviously, people aren't seeing it, because I can't remember the last time somebody signed up and gave both. Sometimes, if I can find a city / state in their gc.com profile, I'll approve them. The rest of the time I send an email asking for the missing info. Even then, about half the time, they never reply so I end up deleting the starter account anyway.

Help me out. Is that "IMPORTANT, etc" there? Why don't people pay attention?

Where/when exactly are people supposed to include their city/state and such info ? 'Cause I remember when I signed up, I couldn't find anywhere to put that. :?

I realize that this information is not required by the form when you sign up. But, if people are looking at the portal page before registering, it shouldn't be too much of a leap for them to use their gc.com name as the "name" they sign up with and their city/state under "location".

Am I asking for too much? Or, should I just let anybody sign up and then deal with all the spam?

Or, is there any need for "location" if their geocaching name is valid?

I think tis a valid thing to be asking for, honestly. Maybe rewording it to say something about putting your location in your profile would make it a little easier to understand ? Maybe tis just me having a hard time when I originally signed up. lol

I personally think it's a good thing, I HATE forums that have spam... especially if there's not a report button, but then the moderator(s) get to deal with deleting all the crap.

So my opinion would be to continue on requiring the city/state. Is there any way to make that a required field that you can't click submit til it has something listed?

I agree about the spam, which is why I've made the requirements the way they are. In 11 months, I've had to delete zero spam.

Unfortunately, with these "Free" forums, there's no way to make that a required field. Just as there's no way to customize the welcome, etc.

All right, thanks to jaygill, I now realize the problem. There is no place on the registration page for your location. I've changed the message on the portal page to let folks know that they can expect an email for the information.

Additional information can only be added once you've been approved and you then edit your profile.

Sorry for all the confusion.
