Caching a game of honesty?

Postby Yazzman » Mon Nov 24, 2008 10:17 pm

Ok it's my turn to whine. I drove a long way for a FTF the other day and I found I was the second to find. But in the FTF's log she said she was with owner of cache when it was placed. Is caching not a game of honesty?? I just had to vent for a minute and I'm glad isn't $4.00 a gallon anymore. Thanks for letting me vent.

So what if I was with the owner when the cache was placed ? How many others have been in the same situation and you've whined to them and about them on open forums ? Are you more upset that I signed the log first, or that I didn't post my find 'til almost a week later ? Buy me a laptop, and maybe I'll start posting my finds before I get home from a trip. On second thought, I'd rather spend my trip FINDING caches, rather than posting on forums or the cache page that I found a cache. FTF isn't a prize. Tis just something that happens with new caches. Get over it and go find some more caches.

Just my two cents.... if you're with the owner when it was placed, I think you'd be considered more of an honorary FTF. And the first person to find it after it's placed on the web would be the actual FTF.

Would it make any difference if the owner's sent me up the hill for the next cache (which they archived to place the new one), gave me the coordinates when I came back, and told me to find it ? Probably not, just 'cause you missed out on a FTF. Big deal. FTF doesn't give any special smilie or prize or anything. What if the owner was on the way to replacing a cache that had been muggled while caching with you and they tossed the cache to you and said to sign it before it was placed in it's hiding spot ? Would that constitute you not getting the find just 'cause you didn't "find" it in the actual hiding spot, even though you'd already been there more than once looking for it ? You know, I'm tired of getting attacked directly and indirectly for PLAYING THE GAME MY WAY. Tis a bloody game! Everyone plays it their own way.

By the way, tis thread's not even posted in the correct place. Tis a "rant and rave," and has NOTHING to do with activities and events.

Ahhh...the FTF conundrum. That's a tough one. Who is really FTF? Is it a FTF if you're there when it's hidden? What if you were the beta tester? What if you found it and forgot your pen, went back to the car and another cacher signed the log in your absence? What if someone signs their name above yours and claims FTF? (that actually happened to another cacher)

I decided to quest for knowledge concerning the FTF question. I hiked up to the summit of a nearby mountain where I lit four film cans on fire and sacrificed an ammo can. In deep meditation the answer came to me.......or maybe I just checked out the Cacheopedia.

Doesn't really say a whole lot does it.

Of course, I have an opinion, but...

You should never question the Cacheopedia!!!

I'll break it down for you heathen. Groundspeak doesn't record the FTF count or even have a way of confirming which cacher was FTF. Racing for FTF's is an aspect of the game that many geocachers enjoy but since it is not regulated in any way it is easy for disputes to arise.

Since it is a sub-game of sorts then you can make up rules as you go along. Howlingmoon was given the FTF by the cache owner. So she claimed a FTF.
However, since the cache had not even been published yet, Yazzman can claim a FTFP since he was the first geocacher to actually seek and find the newly published cache. Both get to claim it.

So there you go. Everybody's happy. Now go punish yourself.

I think one should let someone rant without criticism lest their rants be criticized themselves.

:?

crit-i-cize: 1. To find fault with. 2. To judge the merits and faults of.

I must apologize to Yazzman and Howlingmoon if for some reason in my jest it appeared I found (fault?) or gave the impression of (judging?) either of you in some way. Just in case it was more than just one readers misunderstanding.

I did find it curious that you chose the conjunction "lest." That word implying I have some sort of fear of being criticized when in actuality the opposite is true. I've found that constructive criticism is a very valuable tool in aiding in my understanding of any subject.

Well....unless it's from my wife. Then she's wrong. I distinctly remember "obey" being in our vows. I'm going to have the preacher repeat that when we renew them.
