We have recently been putting "We look forward to reading your logs unless they are cut and paste or use acronmyns." Realizing that this is not going to change the world, we know it takes time and expense and work to place a cache and we firmly believe that a cache owner deserves more than a blank log or just initials or cut and paste.

Whenever I see blank logs or just "TFTC" or some electronically issued auto-log, I send the cacher an email through their profile on Geocaching.com with the following message:
I’m glad to see that you have found several of my caches. However, since you are a new geocacher, you may not be aware of this, but it would be so rewarding to me as a cache owner if you would spend a little more time logging about your experience in finding the caches on the website. The only benefit I get for my time and trouble in placing and maintaining a cache is the electronic log recorded on the Geocaching.com website when a geocacher finds it. "TFTC" is the worst possible log you could write. Some cache owners delete logs like that. I don't think that I will, but I would appreciate it if you would go back and revise your logs and take more time in the future when you log a find.

Respectfully,

I’m glad to see that you have found several of my caches. However, since you are a new geocacher, you may not be aware of this, but it would be so rewarding to me as a cache owner if you would spend a little more time logging about your experience in finding the caches on the website. The only benefit I get for my time and trouble in placing and maintaining a cache is the electronic log recorded on the Geocaching.com website when a geocacher finds it. "Sent from my mobile device" is the worst possible log you could write. In fact, it is down right lazy since you didn't actually write it. You just pressed a button on your phone without typing anything in. Some cache owners delete logs like that. I don't think that I will, but I would appreciate it if you would go back and revise your logs and take more time in the future when you log a find. I and other cache owners would appreciate it. It's just a matter of geocaching etiquette that you need to be aware of.

Respectfully,

Old River Runner

Sometimes I get a response thanking me, because they didn't know. Sometimes no response, but the log is changed. And sometimes nothing. But at least they can no longer use the excuse, "I didn't know."

Also, one does NOT have to read these or any other forums, or be a member of a geocaching group, to learn what is the proper thing to do. If one is new to geocaching, all they have to do is read the information provided on Geocaching.com about how to geocache, including the following statement:
When you get home, log your experience online by going back to that cache page and using the links provided. The cache owner is automatically notified of your log and is always happy to know about your adventure, the condition of their cache, and any environmental factors. Upload photos to share your experience visually with other geocachers.
The problem is that people don't read the instructions any more before they start doing stuff. So, yes, maybe they don't know better. But I believe that is their fault, for being too lazy to read up on how to do geocaching and the proper do's and don't's, before they jump in and start doing it.

When I started geocaching in 2003, geocachers were more conscientious of others, the hides were more challenging, and the game was more interesting. Today, I think too many cachers are just lazy and are too interested in racking up large numbers on lousy caches. I really hate the excuse, "Well, it's just a game, and everyone can play it their own way." And, "They are too busy." Or, "They can't remember."

Bull.

There, my RANT is over and I feel much better. :D

As a followup to my earlier rant, I sent one my emails out a few days ago to a cacher who had logged finds on two of my caches in Mt. Nebo State Park and the online logs were blank.

Today, I received the following response:
Hi there Old River Runner, I appreciate the note you sent me last week after we found a few of your geocaches on Mt Nebo. I went back and updated the logs for each of the ones we found. We are definitely new to the whole geocaching process and I was also using a new app on my IPhone which took me a little while to learn. The whole family is really enjoying learning about geocaching. I appreciate the feedback and patience with this new geocaching family! :)

So, don't be afraid to challenge folks on their poor logs. Feedback works! At least some of the time! :D

Thought I would share my lastest type of log I am getting. A geocacher with the word Dog in his caching name (this is only part of his name) is posting his finds and did not finds alike with one single word... BARK.

Looks like it's the actual dog of the other 'dog' that is always on the cache logs for the same day.
