Apply for a cache permit........

Postby teamjandt » Wed Dec 15, 2010 5:43 pm

........ with the Arkansas State Parks? There is a very old concrete arch bridge on a county rd. that runs through the P.G. Battlefield Park property. It was built in 1923 and I really think cachers would enjoy seeing it. Any info or suggestions would appreciated. Thanks!

I think you are refering to "Wolverton Bridge" adopted by C.E. Wolverton because he once owned most of the surrounding property.
Don't take this for gospel, but I believe it to now be owned by the Keith Black(a world famous sculpter of bronze) family.
I think they have turned the property into a nursery and the parks commision have not gobbled this up yet.
They are however taking most of the property NNW of hwy 62 in and around the Viney Grove community.

Most of the battle took place from the illinois River west and northwest from the ridgeline inside the park.
I would stop by the nursey and ask them about the ownership.

FYI for anyone interested, the P.G.Park made the list as one of the best restored civil war sites in the nation,
I think it came it at around number 3 or4 right behind Pea Ridge.

It would be a great place for a cache, or for waymarking, it's a work of art.

I thought the Black's owned this property too. I went to school with Kieth Jr. and I use to know the Black's well, but we've lost touch through the years. The two factors that lead me to believe that they may not own this now are the signs on either side of the bridge declaring State Park property and the web page showing Park boundries when I enter the coordinates on the online form for the cache. If the map is correct the Park owns well North of the Black's home place. I guess I could stop in at the Park and ask.
And you are correct, the old bridge is a work of art. What I find interesting is that you can see an old road bed and bridge supports on the south side of the exsisting bridge, which makes me wonder what this bridge replaced. Hopefully I'll be able to bring others here to enjoy it.

If you go to Chuck Wallas profile page he has the permits you can download.
PG does not allow caches. Sorry for the bad news.

Ya I talked to the Park Superindent yesterday. PG is considered a Historical Park and not a Recreational Park. But I may be able to move the cache further East out of the Park boundries and accomplish the same thing, which is to bring people to see the bridge. So all is not lost.

You could use the actual bridge as a stage of a multi also. There's probably some info that could be used to indicate the coordinates to the nearby final cache location, thus ensuring they visited the bridge. And, as redink has said, you could also waymark it. Although CW will probably call it a mystery cache, it would actually be what was a multi. This is exactly what groundspeak wanted done when the did away with virtual several years ago.

I thought about the multi, but the form I read at the Park also clearly stated no waymarking as well as no geocaches. And since I was a little unclear about waymarking I placed it outside the Park (but not too far) and only referenced the bridge as a place to visit after logging the cache. I almost decided against the cache altogether but really, there aren't many of these old bridges around and it would be nice if people could enjoy them for the short time they have left.

So, they don't want visitors to the park? You never know what might get damaged by a digital camera.

I adopted the cache at the Battlefield, as well as Devil's Den.
When I went to the park to introduce myself as well as a hand written letter
from the State Parks commisioner about our good deeds on adopting all
state park geocaches and geo cachers in general, I got an very cold feeling
from the the super. He's strict and by the book for sure.

On the other hand I am sure he has a tough job, he's just not a people person (IMHO)
which is strange when he told me they have over 200,000 visitors a year. I do not know if this include the
labor day fair or not. The tour guide is a great asset to the park.
I had a hard time convincing them most of the buildings and structures were moved from other sites.

It's still a great park though with a good staff, just be carefull of the cameras especially in the museum.
