A Sad Day

Postby OEnavigators » Sun Jan 04, 2009 7:14 pm

:( It seems while hiking around a drainage yesterday I lost my GPS. At first I thought I'd simply misplaced it at home but after looking all day it dawned on me. I went back and searched everywhere and can't find it. It was so depressing. Now I'm completely bummed out.

Sorry to hear that man, OE. I lost my first GPS back in college before I was into geocaching; definately a mix of emotions.

Try to look on the brightside, they're a lot cheaper than they once were and you may have been due for an upgrade.

There are much worse things in life than losing your toy... I hate saying such a cliche statement, but it's true.

Wait a minute, you lost your GPS? But, I thought you had a Magellan.

Sorry Chris, couldn't resist.

Oh hardy har-har! Well on the bright side, I won't have to spend endless nights waiting by the window to see if it finds its way home.

Have it declared as a mystery cache. I guarantee there will be a race to FTF in this group.

If I lost my GPS, I would be up a creek. lol Mine can't find it's way out of a paper bag, much less find it's way back to me! LOL Maybe you'll come across a better GPS soon, and not have to spend too much money on it. In fact, I'm SURE you'll find a better one, now knowing you had a Magellan. grins

I lost my first GPSr by leaving it on top of my truck and driving off. realizing a little while later, i went back to where i started and spent 3 hrs combing the side of the road. It happened coming out of a campground in Colorado, and later a fellow camper on a motorcycle pulled up and asked me ' is this yours?' I felt like kissing him. ( dont worry, i didnt:) turns out he was camped in the site next to mine and saw it in the ditch as he was pulling out to head home.! He had gone from site-to-site asking everyone in the campground if it was theirs. What a guy! He could have easily just taken it home. There ARE still some good people in the world.

Sorry to hear that OE. I know the awful feeling that you get when you lose your GPS. I started my 2009 out doing just that. I was on the hunt for a FTF. A heck of a hill stood between me and my goal but I completed my goal...I made it back down the hill without breaking my neck as it was getting dark. I got back to my car as darkness set in....and realization set in as well....The GPS is somewhere on that mountain.
Fortune favored me the next day when I returned and reclimbed the mountain and discovered my GPS 3/4ths of the way back up.
Too bad you lost yours but maybe since it was devine intervention since it was a Magellen

That's a great log. I'm glad you found your GPS. I'm still learning the in's and out's of the Garmin red ink loaned me. I've used it for a few caches and the accuracy is amazing. All the caches were right where the arrow pointed. This game is almost too easy now! I'm definitely going to upgrade from my old GPS. Now I just have to decide between a Garmin or a Delorme.

OE what's the cords for cache going to be? I'll try to get FTF. Oh what's wrong with Magellan's? Mine is with in a couple feet every time. I have never used a Garmin before.

I'm actually still working on finding that infernal waterfall. I got another lead so just as soon as I get time I'll go back out there and try to locate it. I'm getting real tired of this ammo can sitting here laughing at me. It's personal now.

The problem with Magellan is lack of WAAS. When they changed the sattelites back during the summer of '07, your unit had to be on around that time (which my original 210 was) to find the new satellites position. However, if you ever reset the defaults on your unit you lost WAAS. Permanently. Which happened to my 210 and unfortunately my 400 I got on eBay, was never on during that time and therefore could not receive a WAAS signal. I'm not really that techno savvy. You can read more about it in this thread over in the GC forums.

Chris,
I must apologize for my fellow cacher's reaction to you losing your GPS.

When I first read in the forums you had lost your GPS, I thought here's a
good friend, a family man, that could use some help. So having thought
that, I contacted you, and offered my extra Garmin (which according to you is deadly accurate).

I did not know a Magellan was an inferior unit to reading these logs. I then realized it must have been named after Ferdinand Magellean of Spain. If memory serves me correctly he sat sail out of Spain to discover Indonesia (EAST). He wound up being the first to cross the Pacific (WEST)
Off only about 180 degrees, give or take.

I also recall him being slain in the Phillipines on his trip back home, evidently he did not realize he had circumnavigated the globe.

Long story short, deep six the Magellan and use the Garmin, if Ferdinand
had done this he would have known East from West and he could have projected a waypoint of his enemies in the Philippines, avoided being slain and we all could have avoided this entire fiasco, including my post. BTW the rent is due on
loaner! Don't make me come down there. Also I see your find ratio has gone way up.

Chris,
I just visited your website, and read of your bad day! Now I feel like a heel with my above post. I see you left your digital camera on the roof of your car while having it towed. (Glad it wasn't my GPS).

Any way HAPPY BIRTHDAY! and hope things get better for you!

I have an extra camera and vehicle, if you promise not to loose them too!

I hate my birthday. Period.

On the bright side. I've been going on about getting us out hiking more often. Now we get to hike to the grocery store, Wal-Mart, everywhere.
